JIM HALL MEMORIAL

MAY TROUT CLASSIC

“Keeping a tight line” in beautiful

Big Bear Lake, CA

The 2014 Jim Hall Memorial May Trout Classic

was held on May 17 and 18, 2014

Jean Sotiros, of Fontana, became the first female champion in the history of the tournament, landing a 3.92-pound rainbow trout. She moved up to the top spot on the board from fifth last year. It was another close race this year, less than 0.4 pounds separated the top four fish. Tessa Chan, 6, of San Gabriel, won the Pee Wee Division for children ages 5 to 11 with a 1.89-pound rainbow on a night crawler while drift fishing. Nathan Marshall, 13, of Big Bear City, won the Junior Division for anglers ages 12 to 15 by landing a 2.29-pound rainbow and prevented a sweep of the top spots by female fishers.

A big thank you to all of our entrants, sponsors (Pautzke, Okuma, Big Bear Marina, Big Bear Sporting Goods & Holloways Marina), and our volunteers for making this another successful tournament.

The plans for 2015 are now under construction.  The event is scheduled for May 16th and 17th.  So, stayed tuned and keep a tight line."

Goals

To help maintain Big Bear Lake as a premium trout fishery by planting trophy sized fish each year prior to the May Trout Classic. The May Trout Classic will remain a family oriented event with two divisions for the kids between the ages of  five (5) and fifteen (15).  The kids of participants vie for 1st through 3rd places and have a chance at winning rods and reels and trophies. In 2012 we were able to give a fishing pole to every child under eleven thanks to our generous sponsors and your entry monies. You make it all happen!

How It Works

We take the entry money and use approximately thirty percent towards buying trophy sized fish to plant in the lake. We use about twenty-five percent for the cash prizes (these are loose figures based on the number of entrants). The rest goes to prizes for all our hard working participants and minimal costs (like insurance, the awards building…) The entire tournament is run by volunteers.  Without these volunteers and the many wonderful participants, there would be no May Trout Classic.

2014 Classic officials were able to plant 3,400 pounds of trout prior to the event thanks to your support.
