JIM HALL MEMORIAL MAY TROUT CLASSIC
“Keeping a tight line” in beautiful Big Bear Lake, CA |

The 2012 Jim Hall Memorial May Trout Classic will be held on May 19 and 20, 2012
We had a great tournament in 2011. If you recall, the weather was not very cooperative on that Sunday, with fog, wind, rain, sleet and snow. Our volunteer Weigh Station crew was there in parkas, snow boots, & gloves, but their dedication never faltered ( well, maybe a wee bit by 2pm). The storm was over by the time the Awards Ceremony was completed. That's Big Bear! The 1st place winner for a total of $1875. was Jack Storti with his 9.10lb rainbow trout. Photos will be following soon. Michael Torres , age 11, won 1st place in the Pee-Wee division for kids with a rainbow trout weighing in at 2.59lbs, and Cody Hemsley, age 12, took 1st place in the Jr. Division with a 2.39lb rainbow trout. There are new things happening and we’re excited. New sponsors include Pautzke, Daiwa, & Rapala. Okuma is still with us and we thank them all for participating. The new excitement: In addition to our already great prize payouts for large fish, Pautzke, Big Bear Marina, Holloways, & Big Bear Sporting Goods are sponsoring a tagged fish worth $10K if caught on Pautzke Fire Bait (and worth $5K if caught on any other bait).
Goals
To help maintain Big Bear Lake as a premium trout fishery by planting trophy sized fish each year prior to the May Trout Classic. The May Trout Classic will remain a family oriented event with two divisions for the kids between the ages of five (5) and fifteen (15). The kids of participants vie for 1st through 3rd places and have a chance at winning rods and reels and trophies. Last year we were able to give a fishing pole to every child under eleven thanks to our generous sponsors and your entry monies. You make it all happen!
How It Works
We take the entry money and use approximately thirty percent towards buying trophy sized fish to plant in the lake. We use about twenty-five percent for the cash prizes (these are loose figures based on the number of entrants). The rest goes to prizes for all our hard working participants and minimal costs (like insurance, the awards building…) The entire tournament is run by volunteers. Without these volunteers and the many wonderful participants, there would be no May Trout Classic.
This Year
We will be mailing out applications to get to you by April 1st and will accept the first 500 entrants. The application will also be available here on April 1st. The payout is $8000, based on 500 entrants. The first nine (9) places are “in the money”. The entry fee is $65.00. All entrants are given a May Trout Classic hat and are welcome to join us for all the festivities at the awards show. And remember, this is a family affair, bring the kids! |
